Band and Block
Second and Third Order PIM Calculator
The Band and Block PIM Calculators allow you to select various combinations of transmit (downlink) frequency
bands/blocks to determine whether there are any theoretical possibilities of 2nd or 3rd order passive
intermodulation (PIM) products or “hits” being produced in the companion uplink (receive) frequency bands/blocks.
The various blocks are color-coded in white or light grey to identify Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) transmit
(downlink). FDD receive (uplink) is indicated by a red border. Time Division Duplex (TDD) transmit/receive is
indicated by light blue shading. For FDD, the companion transmit and receive blocks in a given band are identified
by the same alpha character. When selected, the FDD transmit blocks or the TDD transmit/receive blocks turn
green. To exclude a frequency block, the corresponding button should be clicked again, returning it to white (FDD)
or light blue (TDD).
The calculators do not use actual modulated signals for the analysis, but continuous wave signals in 1 MHz
increments. Band-edge transmitting signals are not considered because of guard-band implementation, but band-
edge receiver hits are shown due to real-world modulation spreading.
The START 2nd ORDER button will generate any 2nd order hits of the form A+B, A-B, 2A and 2B while the
START 3rd ORDER button will generate any 3rd order hits of the form 2A-B, 2A+B, 2B-A, 2B+A, A+B-C, A+B+C,
A-B-C, 3A or 3B. The calculation progress is displayed in the progress bar. 2nd order hits show up as blue vertical
lines below the receive frequencies affected while 3rd order hits display red vertical lines. To improve calculation
speed, a checkbox is provided to include the TDD frequencies only when necessary. The calculator also includes a
“BRS Blocks are synchronized” checkbox to avoid multiple synchronized BRS blocks from creating in-block, self-
generated PIM.
The NUMBER OF HITS window displays the number of discrete frequencies affected. The VIEW FILE button
creates a Microsoft Notepad file containing the list of selected blocks, mathematical calculation results and includes
a time and date in the header. The Notepad file may contain more combinations than the number shown in the
NUMBER OF HITS window. This can happen when there are multiple hits on one or more discrete frequencies.
To ensure correct results, click the RESET button before each new calculation. It erases all selections and the content
of the Notepad text file. If you want to keep a created text file, please relocate or rename the file because the next
calculation will rewrite it. The program creates the file “pim_EMEA.txt” in the directory C:/PIM.
The CLOSE button is used to close the calculator.
